Picking New Pickups For Your Favorite Electric Guitar

By Kylw Zoltowski

The harmonious and vibrant sound of electric guitars was the most important creation for rock and roll. Back in the 1950's, this type of music was being tried and then in the 60's and 70's, that style was added to until it transformed into rock and roll. The gorgeous sound that comes out of an electric guitar is like no other. It is amazing to ponder where music would have ended up if it hadn't been for the invention of the electric guitar; a terrible idea. A band that doesn't have an electric guitar is like a child without its mother.

Electric guitars come in several different forms, sizes, colors, and designs. Some people have the belief that it does not make a difference what electric guitar you get because they all are the same thing. This is just false; brand, size, pickups, and neck matter in the sound that is made. Therefore, certain brands of electric guitars remained popular for decades because of the perfection in sound. Although, the largest contributing factor to the sound produced is the pickups.

Whether starting a brand new band, jamming solo, or adding instruments to your band's existing stock, you should become aware of the different arrangement of pickups for electric guitars prior to your purchase. Many instrument shops will be ok with you testing them and can be very helpful in giving information that will lead one in picking the most appropriate electric guitar. Make sure to learn about the differences in pickups. Thekinds of pickups for electric guitars are:

* Single Coil Pickups - This style has a single wire and coil. Single coil pickups are the oldest of electric guitar pickups. When using a single coil pickup, the sound is compromised by other frequencies in the room which make a humming sound. These types of pickups are usually not seen today but still used by some very well known artists because of the old style sound they produce.

* Humbucker Pickups - This kind of pickup has two coils so the unwanted hum of the single coil pickup was cancelled out. Essentially, the coil carries two signals: one that the guitar is producing and one that cancels out the hum. The actual piece in this arrangement is called a Humbucker which was patented in 1954. The humbucker is basically the arrangement of two coils.

* Double Coil Pickups - These pickups, like in the name, consist of two coils. But, for one reason, guitarists do want the hum sound from time to time so the double coil pickup electric guitars sometimes come with a switch that can take out the second coil.

There are of other contributors that go into the sound an electric guitar provides. But, pickups are the single most important part of the electric guitar. Other parts such as: neck length, shape, material, frets, and tuners make a difference too but not like the pickups. For years, rock stars have been trying new things in hopes to finding the perfect guitar to make the optimal sound. Rock and roll has transformed in some ways but in many ways it has remained indifferent. - 18780
