The Last Time I Saw Archie: Webb's lone try at comedy is less ludicrous than some of his more earnest films; a shame, since William Bowers' script-based on his own Army experiences had genuine potential, and Mitchum pleasantly underplays as the con guy. By the way, the genuine Archie Chamber sued for invasion of privacy. Cast includes Robert Mitchum, Jack Webb, Martha Hyer, France Nuyen, Louis Nye, Richard Arlen, Don Tangles, Joe Flynn, and Robert Strauss. (98 minutes, 1961)
The Plot against Harry: Entertaining, perceptive look at N.Y.C. life in reference to an aging mobster just sprung from jail, who finds the old guard changing, and his life unravelling. Cast includes Martin Pastor, Ben Lang, Maxine Woods, Henry Nemo, Jacques Taylor, Jean Leslie, Ellen Herbert, and Sandra Kazan. (80 minutes, 1989)
Mr. Nanny: Lame brained comedy characterizing Hogan as a fighter employed to look after a set of ruined, disregarded rich kids (whom nut ball Johansen is plotting to abduct). Cast includes Terry "Hulk" Hogan (Bollea), Sherman Hemsley, Austin Pendleton, Robert Gorman, Madeline Zima, and David Johansen. (84 minutes, 1984)
De-Lovely: Handsome however strange biopic of the incredible songwriter Cole Porter, whose love for his spouse didn't preclude him from chasing homosexual affairs. Kline is much more interesting than the film as the scene in which he instructs Barrowman how to harmonize "Night and Day" shows. Cast includes Kevin Kline, Ashley Judd, Jonathan Pryce, KevIn McNally, Allan Corduner, Sandra Nelson, Keith Allen, James Wilby, John Barrowman, Kevin McKidd, Peter Polycarpou, and Richard Dillane. The League of Gentlemen: Ex-army colonel registers the help of prior officers (through blackmail) to lug off large bank heist. High-style British humor makes this story of crime a pleasure. Cast includes Jack Hawkins, Nigel Patrick, Roger Livesey, Richard Attenborough, Bryan Forbes, Kieron Moore, Robert Coote, and Nanette Newman. (114 minutes, 1960)
The Singing: Nun: Sappy comicbook stuff based on an actual Belgian nun whose dedication is split between religious work and making hit records. Cast includes Debbie Reynolds, Ricardo Montalban, Greer Garson, Agnes Moorehead, Chad Everett, Katharine Ross, Ed Sullivan, Juanita Moore, and Tom Drake. (98 minutes, 1966)
Rich in Love: The individuals behind Driving Miss Daisy have taken Josephine Humphreys' novel and tried difficult to knit another evocative Southern story but they don't really triumph, although there are numerous fine scenes. The film is based on an adolescent trying to keep her family together. Amid the members are her idle dad (another awesome Finney depiction), missing mommy, and nutty sibling. Cast includes Albert Finney, Jill Clayburgh, Kathryn Erbe, Kyle MacLachlan, Piper Laurie, Ethan Hawke, Suzy Amis, and Alfie Woodard. (105 minutes, 1993)
Close Your Eyes: Scotland Yard investigator Henderson draws hypnothethapist Visnjic into a difficult case engaging a serial murderer and a little gal who's been shocked frombeing held hostage by him. Mixing occult factors with a whodunit, this unique, sincerely scary thriller stays on target right to the end. Cast includes Goran Visnjic, Shirley Henderson, Miranda Otto, Paddy Considine, Claire Rushbrook, Fiona Shaw, Coon Redgrave, and Sophie Stuckey (103 minutes, 2003)
The Dinner Game: Humorous charade in regards to a self centered publisher who partakes in a monthly custom with his buddies to ask the stupidest individual they could find to supper. Lhermitte has discovered a doozy, a civil servant Villeret who interferes in his own life in incredible ways. The work is comically ludicrous without being nasty. Cast includes Thierry Lhermitte, Jacques Villeret, Francis Huster, Daniel Prevost, Alexandra Vandernoot, and Catherine Frot. (81 minutes, 1998)
