Cheap Acoustic Guitars - What Choices

By Steve Murray

The main reason why a instrument will cost as much as they do is the materials from which they have been made. Certainly when it comes to stringed instruments like the guitar the better quality ones will have been used wood. But along with wood there are other materials such as graphite and plastic which can be used for making cheap acoustic guitars. The problem with these types is that they will not sound as good.

As you will soon discover those guitars which are not made from wood will not have such a full and round sound as you would have expected. Because of this you may find yourself becoming frustrated and choose to give up learning how to play the guitar altogether. So if you can afford to and have sufficient funds you should invest in a wooden one rather than one of the much cheaper types. Yes you can save money on a cheap one but you will find that you will not enjoy playing it as much.

When you start looking for a cheap acoustic guitar, go for one that has a solid wood top rather than one made from plywood. You will find that the solid wood top give a much richer and fuller tone to the sound it makes. Plus if you can afford to then buy a guitar which not only has a solid wood top but a solid wood back and sides as well.

There are plenty of such guitars available and one that should be high on your list to consider is the Seagull S6. Although not cheap it is certainly value for money as you are unlikely to want to buy another acoustic guitar once you have this one. This particular guitar has a solid cedar top and the sides are made from solid mahogany and which is why it makes such a beautiful sound when played. The fact is that this guitar is of such high quality then many professional musicians will keep this guitar even though they may have several more expensive ones as well.

You can expect to pay around $400 to $500 for this guitar, but if you are really serious about learning to play the guitar then it is wise to invest a little extra in the instrument you buy. However, if you search online you may well find that you are actually able to get some really great deals on this guitar if you spend time looking for it.

Along with the Seagull S6 there are other types of acoustic guitars which produce a good sound but are slightly cheaper. One of these is the Yamaha F310 which costs less because of the materials used to make it. Instead of the top being made from cedar it is made from spruce, but just like the Seagull S6 the sides and back of the Yamaha F310 are constructed from mahogany. On average you can expect to spend about $150 to $200 on this guitar and is the one that those first starting to learn how to play the guitar will choose to buy.

But as well as the Yamaha F310 there is also the Epiphone DR-100 which is slightly less in price than the Yamaha. On average you can expect to spend between $120 and $150 on this guitar. Just like the Yamaha this guitar is made using spruce and mahogany woods and is the ideal instrument for those first starting to learn how to play the guitar. However at some point in the future you will need to upgrade this one for something a little better, especially once you become a more accomplished guitarist.

Although there are plenty of guitars available that cost less than $100 these are not the sort you should consider buying when you are wanting to learn. As you will find the quality of the sound they produce is badly affected and people who choose to buy one of these will often give up learning because they just do not sound as good. The reason for this is that the guitars are not made very well and the materials used because they are poor quality and cheap to buy.

So if you are really serious about getting a cheap acoustic guitar either for your self or your child to play then avoid those in the $100 or less range. Rather if your budget is somewhat restricted go to your local music or guitar store and see if they have any second hand ones for sale. Often you can pick up a really good but cheap acoustic guitars that you can then try out before making a purchase. - 18780
