DramaticalIy overwrought, however this film is fascinating as a social history. Stroller (who's brilliant) died before film was completed. Cast includes Helen Hayes, Robert Stroller, Dean Jagger, Van Heflin, Frank McHugh, and Richard Jaeckel. (122 minutes, 1952)
Great Guns: Later Laural and Hardy Army comedy is weak, not as poor as some although far underneath their classic films. Cast includes Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy, Sheila Ryan, Dick Nelson, and Edmund MacDonald. (74 minutes, 1941)
Fracture: Hopkins plays a cold, determining gentleman who shoots his spouse once he finds she's been in bed with an L.A.P.D. lieutenant. However there is no definative proof, which makes the case a perfect one for partner D.A. Gosling, who's just getting ready to move on to a cushy job at a high-end law firm. Cast includes Anthony Hopkins, Ryan Gosling, David Strathairn, Rosamund Pike, Billy Burke, Fiona Shaw, Bob Gunton, Embeth Davidtz, Cliff Curtis, Xander Berkeley, Josh Starnberg, and Joe Spano. Lightning the White Stallion: Incredibly weak family fare with Rooney a prosperous guy whose racehorse is stolen. Cast includes Mickey Rooney, Isabel Lorea, Susan George, and Billy Wesley. (95 minutes, 1986)
The Guyver: All-American Armstrong, contaminated by an extraterrestrial device, finds that he is an armored superhero, an excellent thing, as long as virtually everyone else in the film might turn into a frightening beast, like CIA representative Hamill, who turns into a large cockroach. Awkward clumps of humor only make the contrived structure appear even more mindless. (92 minutes, 1992)
Dracula: Farfetched, bewildering story of current time's successor of Dr. Van Helsing (Cushing) fighting lately revitalized vampire (Lee). Cast includes Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Stephanie Beacham, Michael Coles, Christopher Neame, and Caroline Munro. (100 minutes, 1992)
Laws of Gravity: Extreme, lucid journal of 3 significant nights in the lives of a set of youthful blue-collar Brooklyn robbers and their lady friends. Shot on a minuscule spending limit, and differentiated by abrasive, Scorsese-Iike reality. The acting is superb and Jean de Segonzac's hand-clutched camcorder is a chief plus. Cast includes Peter Greene, Adam Trese, Edie Falco, Arabella Territory, and Paul Schulzie. (100 minutes, 1991)
