They Were Expendable - One of the best and most underrated of all WW2 films, based on the factual tale of America's PT boat battalion in the Philippines throughout the early nights of the battle. Touching, exquisitely detailed production photographed by Joseph August under Ford's unique hand, with real-life Naval Officer Montgomery. Cast includes Robert Montgomery, John Wayne, Donna Reed, Jack Holt, Ward Bond, Leon Ames, Jack Pennick, and Tom Tyler. (135 minutes, 1945)
The Defiant - A preoccupying tale of 2 fugitive convicts, one black and one white who are chained together as they escape from the penitentiary in the South. Superior performances by Williams and Chaney as individuals they meet during the voyage. Academy Prize for screenplay by Harold Jacob Smith and Nathan E. Cast includes Tony Curtis, Sidney Poitier, Theodore Bike, Charles McGraw, Carnie Williams, and Lon Chaney, Jr. (97 minutes, 1958)
The Geisha Boy - Jerry, an inept warlock, voyages to Japan with calamitous repercussions. Creative graphic gags; there's a clever pattern characterizing the Los Angeles Dodgers and, purposely, Gil Hodges. Cast includes Jerry Lewis, Marie McDonald, Sessue Hayakawa, Nobu McCarthy, Suzanne Pleshette, Barton MacLane, and Robert Hirano. (98 minutes, 1958)
Lunatics and Lovers - Aristocrat Mastroianni has a fictional spouse; an organ grinder persuades prostitute Mori to "impersonate" her. While it is not stupid, it's monotonous. Cast includes Marcello Mastroianni, Claudia Mori, Lino Morelli, Flora Carabella, and Adriano Celentano. (93 minutes, 1976)
Vertical Limit - Peter Garett, an ex mountain climber who gave the sport up after his father died tragically while climbing, discovers himself in a troubling situation. His sister and climbing partner have been trapped in a deep crevasse while trying to climb the famous K2 peak. He is one of the few people capable of even attempting a near impossible rescue. Time is of the essence, as the trapped climbers will soon freeze to death.
It Takes All Kinds - Fair triple-cross drama in reference to Miles' guarding of Lansing after the man by accident kills a sailor in a fight in Australia. Cast includes Vera Miles, Barry Sullivan, Sid Melton, and Dime Sugg. (98 minutes, 1969)
Frontier Hellcat - Another Karl Winnetou story, which seizes the essence of the Old West in the quest of pioneers passing through Rockies. Cast includes Stewart Granger, Elke Sommer, Pierre Brice, and Gotz George. (98 minutes, 1966)
In Enemy Country - So-so WW2 story, set in France and England, filmed on a back-lot. Not very persuading. Cast includes Tony Franciosa, Anjanette Comer
