The Beatles Remastered in 2009

By Harold Laurence Quesenberry

The Beatles legendary albums were originally remastered digitally for compact disc in the late 80s at that time remastering for CD was a relatively new art and since then much has been learned about how to master best but most important is all of the many technological advances during that time.

The many leaps forward in digital mastering and all of the know how learned of how to best remaster digitally have been put to good use with the remastered Beatles releases of 2009. On September 9 The Beatles released both The Beatles in Stereo and The Beatles in Mono. And both remastered box sets sound fantastic. If you've yet to hear 'em, I recommend you get your hands on The Beatles remasters as soon as you can.

Which flavor of Beatles remastered should a fan get? Well for me the answer was easy: "all of them" but if you can only choose one you'll probably want to go with the stereo box set since it includes all 13 of their UK studio albums and most listeners will like the stereo mixes more than the mono mixes.

The mono set is aimed at really serious fans who want to hear all of the differences between the mono and stereo mixes (and sometimes they are really quite different from each other) and for those who want to hear The Beatles how they originally heard them (this, of course, applies to older fans who were there for The Beatles in person in the 1960s.)

As of December 8, 2009 there's a third choice: The Beatles USB Memory Stick. This USB flash drive includes the Beatles entire stereo remastered box set in a little stick you can easily hold in your hand. How cool is that? And it actually contains all of their albums in two ways; better than CD quality 24bit FLAC and 320kbps mp3s.

It's the "better than CD quality" part is what will bring in plenty of audiophiles but for most people it is the high quality mp3s that'll be most interesting. - 18780

Hi-Hat Drum Samples - Effective Use

By John Gellei

The hi-hat drum samples of today are as varied as they are underappreciated. Think about your favorite songs for a moment. You can probably hear the kick and snare working away in memory, but it can be very hard to keep track of the hi-hat. The truth is, most hi-hats (hats for short) are just supporting acts to the snare and kick combinations that dominate our attention, but they are nevertheless an essential part of most music production projects, so underestimate them at your peril!

The two 'mistakes' of hi-hat hip hop samples we're about to look into are no the domain of the beat making novice, but are committed nearly just as much by so-called professionals these days.

The first mistake we need to address is the volume. Hip hop drum samples need to be loud, we all understand that there is a loudness war, but the hi-hat is one exception. It is said by some biology and evolutionary experts that many thousands of years ago aerial predators were attacking us that made noises that have similar frequencies like those in hi-hats and cymbals. We simply have a tendency to hear these sounds more than others, so lowering them a few DB below where you think they should go is a smart move.

A good way to go about combating this incongruity is to mix the hat to the point where you think it sounds just about right, and lower it about two decibels further. Any listener will still be able to pick it up due to our superior perception of this sound, so don't worry about 'mixing it out' these drum samples.

The second mistake that we're going to look at is a pretty big one. Most of us are in the music production game to really make something that sounds good, but if you're trying to achieve authenticity with your drum samples, there are certain things you really need to avoid and be wary of. With hi-hats, certain physical limitations prevent rhythmic operations that are perceived in a lot of rap songs. For instance, having a consistent hi-hat pattern playing one hit every 16th is all good, as that can be achieved. But coupling it with a cymbal hit or open hi-hat once a bar and not stopping the hi-hat? Physically impossible for most drum-sets, especially if the snare and toms also hit at the same point. How many arms does your drummer have? If you want to have a believable drum track, you must really pay attention here. If you produce dance music or other music where it is understood that the sample track is not supposed to be realistic, you can do whatever sounds good.

If you can manage to get your hands on professional programs likle BFD ('Big F'n Drums') or Toontrack's EZ Drummer, you can learn a great deal when it comes to organizing and sequencing drums properly for use in live settings, like those for rock and metal songs, for example. Then make note of what appeals to you and what you could implement. - 18780

Guitar Effects Pedals: An Introduction and Purchasing Guide

By R. S. Rasnick

Guitar effects pedals have been on the scene since the 1960's when guitar-based music became predominant. An engineer named Roger Mayer is credited with inventing the first guitar effects device, a "fuzz" box, that evolved into the modern distortion and overdrive pedal, and the wah pedal. Mayer's clients included such noted rock n' rollers as Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, and Jimi Hendrix. Supposedly, Mayer created the first effects pedal for his friend in the early 1960's. Now, countless effects pedals are used by guitar players every day.

Effects pedals are used to give the guitarist more tonal colors or, that is, an expansion of timbre on his instrument's palette. It's possible to use an amplifier's settings to create these different tonal colors, too, but the amplifier is limited to what effects it can give, plus its settings would have to be changed only between songs, whereas guitar players frequently want to change tonality and color in the midst of playing a single song, and often many times over.

So, just like the electric guitar and the amplifier offered guitarists a wider variety of tonal choices, effects pedals, too, give them even more options in shaping their tone. Electric guitarists are not the only ones to use effects pedals, however. Acoustic guitarists and classical players often draw upon them as well, but they tend to eschew the sounds of overdrive and distortion pedals enjoyed by electric guitarists.

Since the first pedals were created, rack-mounted guitar effects have become more common. These were more popular during the 1980's, thanks to companies like Yamaha and Eventide. Since rack gear requires a more sophisticated and time-consuming approach (not to mention considerably more money) than pedals, most guitar players prefer effects pedals for their simplicity and tweakability.

When they have their effects selected, most guitar players will mount their pedals on a pedalboard to facilitate transportation and storage of their effects. This system makes it much easier to activate the pedals as well, since they are contained in a relatively small space. Since wah and volume pedals operate a bit differently (they are rocked back and forth rather than simply switched on), they are mounted to make this usage easier.

For ease of use, most (if not all) effects pedals can be turned on or off with a simple step of the toe, which can be useful in many musical situations. For example, if one wanted to switch from a heavily distorted tone to a clean tone quickly and easily, in order to have different tones for different sections of the song, it's easy to do so. Another quick motion and the distorted tone returns. Simple!

It's safe to say that most guitarists expend a lot of effort to get the "perfect" sound, and this involves configuring their guitars, amps, and effects pedals in the right combination. There are many different types of effects for players to chose from today: delay, vibrato, tremolo, chorus, pitch-shifting, flanger, overdrive, distortion, and the list goes on and on. Such effects can have significant changes on a guitarist's sound, which explains their ever-increasing popularity.

So if you are a developing electric guitar player who wants to explore new sonic landscapes, check out some guitar effects pedals today! - 18780
