The Beatles Remastered in 2009
The Beatles legendary albums were originally remastered digitally for compact disc in the late 80s at that time remastering for CD was a relatively new art and since then much has been learned about how to master best but most important is all of the many technological advances during that time.
The many leaps forward in digital mastering and all of the know how learned of how to best remaster digitally have been put to good use with the remastered Beatles releases of 2009. On September 9 The Beatles released both The Beatles in Stereo and The Beatles in Mono. And both remastered box sets sound fantastic. If you've yet to hear 'em, I recommend you get your hands on The Beatles remasters as soon as you can.
Which flavor of Beatles remastered should a fan get? Well for me the answer was easy: "all of them" but if you can only choose one you'll probably want to go with the stereo box set since it includes all 13 of their UK studio albums and most listeners will like the stereo mixes more than the mono mixes.
The mono set is aimed at really serious fans who want to hear all of the differences between the mono and stereo mixes (and sometimes they are really quite different from each other) and for those who want to hear The Beatles how they originally heard them (this, of course, applies to older fans who were there for The Beatles in person in the 1960s.)
As of December 8, 2009 there's a third choice: The Beatles USB Memory Stick. This USB flash drive includes the Beatles entire stereo remastered box set in a little stick you can easily hold in your hand. How cool is that? And it actually contains all of their albums in two ways; better than CD quality 24bit FLAC and 320kbps mp3s.
It's the "better than CD quality" part is what will bring in plenty of audiophiles but for most people it is the high quality mp3s that'll be most interesting. - 18780
