The Beatles Second Album: With The Beatles

1963's With The Beatles is definitely not not the best Beatles studio album, in fact it is likely their least great studio album. But that is not to say I do not love listening to it in it's new fabulous remastered form nor is it to say that it does not have any memorable songs on it because that is definitely not the case.

I do think that when looking only at the 8 Beatles originals on the record, it's arguably the least good selection of original compositions The Beatles ever released on an album (the underrated Beatles For Sale (1964) has a far better selection of 8 original songs in my opinion) on the other hand, the covers on this album are good (superior to the covers on Beatles For Sale, which was their fourth album.)

My most favorite originals to listen to on the With The Beatles Remastered CDs (mono and stereo) are the first three tracks: "It Won't Be Long," "All I've Got To Do," and "All My Loving." In particular I have been loving track #2 "All I've Got To Do" in the remastered mono. It sounds delicious.

Another song that has actually been making an impression on me is track #9, "Hold Me Tight." Paul wrote and sang lead vocals on this one and he's been very dismissive of it. And while the song is far from Paul's best work, I think it has a certain charm.

Among the cover songs I think "Till There Was You" is my favorite. It's an extremely sickly sweet ballad and while I feel I shouldn't like it, I do anyway. The record's final track, "Money" is a great way to end the album. When I listen close to the remastered mono version I realize that the song rocks much harder than I ever realized.

In general I prefer the stereo mixes(especially with the later albums which are my favorite, anyway) when it comes to the 2009 Beatles remasters but I do think that this CD sounds a bit better in mono than in stereo. - 18780
